The intervertebral disc is the structural element that unites two vertebral bodies. There is a great amount of water in it and it is very resilient. It serves in the damping of loads from one vertebral body to another. Its structure is frail and gradually deteriorates. Additionally, with a sudden move, It could be damaged, dislocated and push a nerve causing pain. This medical condition is called herniated intervertebral disc disease; other names are slipped disc, spinal disc herniation, and disc protrusion.
The resilience of the spinal discs is gradually lost with advancing age, they get harder and shrink. This has the effect of the radiographic stenosis of the intervertebral space.
Except for the violent injury of the disc, there are other deteriorations that can be caused by diseases such as Spondylolysis, or Spondylolisthesis/
The disk is always checked with an MRI. Since the discs deteriorate with advancing age, there are always problematic discs. These findings cannot be evaluated without the assistance of neurology.
